WEEK THREE – BIBLIOGRAPHY 2

Below are two more bibliographies chosen from the second class presentation, all under the theme of home however completely different in the sense.

The first bibliography I chose to look at was a documentary film called ” human flow ” by director Ai Wei Wei. The trailer was first shown in 2016 however the documentary did not air until 2017 in Germany. The film itself is based on the refugee crisis that has gradually grown over the years and the personal human impact over the course of one year, expanding over 23 different countries. some of the countries include Greece, Kenya, Afghanistan, Iraq and Israel, they did this in order to show the different impact within different countries based on their development rate.

Ai Wei Wei stated that he wanted to show how the refugee crisis can be split into four categories, these being the wars between states, ethnic conflicts, non ethnic conflicts and flights from oppression. During the filming the crew discovered that they filmed way more than expected, therefore many more interviews and cinematography was combined into a second film called “the rest” in which Ai Wei Wei dives into microscopic details regarding the refugee crisis rather than the general idea, causing for a much more in depth documentary.

“I’m not a brave person, I’m trying to maintain my integrity”

The second part I decided to research from the bibliography was Lee John Phillips, the shed project which was first began in 1994. The shed project was created originally as a tribute to Phillips`s grandfather after his passing. It was decided that to commemorate his grandfather he would begin to draw every single object that remained in the working shed. the project began as a hobby I believe but soon after developed into something that would become his whole life’s work because of the amount of individual microscopic items that were needed to be drawn.

Lee John Phillips stated that he gave himself certain rules when it came to his project as he didn’t want it to become too overwhelming generally. There were four main rules that he set himself, these being….

1. IF THE ITEM CAN BE PICKED UP AND DOESN’T CRUMBLE IF RUBBED – DRAW IT.

2. IF THE PACKET/CONTAINER IS/HAS BEEN OPENED, EMPTY IT, DRAW ITEMS, REPLACE THEM, DRAW CONTAINER FULL.

3. IF THE PACKET/CONTAINER HAS NOT BEEN OPENED, IT WILL NOT BE, AND DRAWN AS FOUND.

4. IF THERE ARE MULTIPLES OF THE SAME ITEMS – DRAW THEM ALL.

His work consisted of black and white illustrations, some being of singular objects and others being repetitive patterns based on microscopic objects, below is one of his popular illustrations.
