WEEK 4 – RICHARD

MONDAY:

Negative feelings again after negative events.

Real therapy won’t help

Student wellbeing won’t help

Academic institutions won’t help

I only help myself with my art:

Watched the kings theatre performance of arctic monkeys, this opening of the band, and like in 101 depeche mode film.

  • Those moments when the band is rehearsing and preparing
  • Make-up for kelsey
  • The costume?
  • Looking in the mirror
  • Vocal exercises
  • Homage to cracked actor scenes in cars, car with green screen on them

THE AUDIENCE & ACT ON STAGE, EITHER LIVE OR FILM:

  • Images of hands going to reach out for the live star, and Kelsey also reaching out with hand
  • In things you said they look like a religious cult, dare i say a hitler salute? (david bowie saying western europe will create a fascist again, and becomes one)
  • Arms swaying back and forth
  • Moshpit, people getting hurt, i got hurt in the one I started
  • Crowdsurfing, lifting someone up.
  • Phone lights used to be torches or flames. No phones!
  • Audience muttering lyrics, cross-cut between the act
  • Women on shoulder screaming while act is singing like in blasphemous rumours, arms go down over face like its a cult
  • Some are just staring. Create different types of staring audience: drugs, awe, amazement, anxiety, nervousness. Maybe artist can have a moment of shared anxiety with that one fan.
  • Sweat on stage. Do you like to sweat on stage? Sweat in audience. This could be a moment when SCREEN amplifies it, CLOSE UPS OF SWEATY FACE.
  • Throwing a piece of clothing like a jumper or shirt to the crowd especially when they’ve taken it off cause it’s so hot. Strip clothes one after another – though that wouldn’t be appropriate, but it is an interesting image.

WROTE A SONG

Listening to kings theatre version All the pretty visitors.

A quick song about the sexy beauty of making music. Needs more input? Want some of that creativity and playfulness of humbug lyrics

The Grinning Jesus barred his doors

To our communions at sweet rich (arts) tapestry eve

I’m out alone alone alone on an 11pm

On sweet shandy experiments

Full of vile, rejections & tantrums

I see my neighbour in the dark

He who grins even more than Jesus

He’ll leave me hanging

And so will my anxiety

And the tyrant at Number 9

Alone and vile

I dream violence

But I really want rock ‘n roll

Equations still missing

People pissing on me

But I still say

Making is beautiful

Maybe it’ll stay all in my mind

But I’ll always be making there

Always staying in blue lights (lighting cue)

Making in those blue lights

VERSE 2

CHORUS

BRIDGE

FINAL CHORUS:

But I still say

Making is beautiful

Maybe it’ll stay all in my mind

But I’ll always be making there

Always staying in blue lights (lighting cue)

Making in those blue lights

And will they be on stage one day

All on me and my family

Telling stories like the cinematography

& Scenography kids should be telling

As we stay in the blue lights

As we stay

As we bathe

As we bathe in the blue lights

WATCHING 101:

  • Girl screaming

WEDNESDAY

THE CLASS:

Here we go again – we’re cooking, cooking the Creative Arts Curry. It was nice, cooking again. There’s more of a community feeling in the course now.

I did feel it tasted nicer last time, but that’s probably just nostalgia.

I sang, or as they put it, serenaded Mason and Becky while they were putting tofu together.

Can’t post photos cause my phone is broken and can’t access photos right now. But I did some lovely moving shots with the GoPro around.

Wrote some poetry.

Where is it??

Left it there by the looks of it, must find it again.

RESEARCH:

Rikrit Tirivanija:

  • Thai Contemporary Artist
  • Born in Buenos Aires, raised in Thailand, Ethiopia & Canada

SATURDAY

Conceptual meeting with Vivian

THE PSYCHOLOGICAL JOURNEY OF THE ARTIST:

  • They dream of big crowds, they start singing to very empty bars like Rummers Open Mic
  • Why do big crowds matter? The money, the attention, mass attention, compensating for other lacks of love, David Bowie said: “a lot of young artists are quite desperate for love from their fans. I don’t need that now because I get a lot of love from my wife” The longing for love & affection, represent that in a moment where the audience cross the threshold and interact with the audience, maybe earlier
  • The clapping like the constant clapping at beginning of devotional behind the wheel.
  • People on people’s shoulders
  • Climb/crawl on the floor?
  • People do faint at concerts – hysteria, drugs, dehydration
  • But also, everytime the crowd gets bigger, as well as there being a lot of excitement there’s even more nervousness
  • When you feel you have the perfect show, the eruption applause, the story of the actor who cried in his changing room
  • The joy and love of a connection
  • Having them say the lyrics while holding mic out, like in stripped devotional performance
  • Or not like with iggy pop at rock n roll hall of fame
  • Encore, we want more, there is an encore, and the audience want another, and it neer stops

THE PSYCHOLOGICAL JOURNEY OF THE AUDIENCE:

  • Teenagers/Kids wanting to get away from home
  • An underground gig, a resistance
  • In the build up to the Berlin Wall falling there were concerts in East Berlin, June 1987 – David Bowie, Eurythmics & Genesis…
  • Illegal gatherings, also like for example in Lockdown
  • Similarity of concerts & raves

REPRESENTING THE ARTIST & THE AUDIENCE:

  • One half of space is the artist and other side is the audience
  • Grid walking as a starting point, start imitating the mosh pit
  • Trance is the staring

Bringing in brain chemistry:

ELVIS:

This story has been told loads of times before, is it even worth me telling? It’s more me collecting all the parts of it in other people.

Often called the King of Rock ‘n Roll

The character of Colonel Tom Parker

Another manager who was exploitative, that of amy, told in the story of rehab?

AMY:

“The talent and the tragedy now on More 4…”

Photos story

BILLIE EILISH:

There was shock at billie’s change of hair colour from black to blonde?

And a change of clothes?

“People think she can’t think for herself”

CRACKED ACTOR – DAVID BOWIE:

Video on a flickering 1974 TV showing an interview

Have some narrator like alan yentob talking about Kelsey’s life? “Impartial”? Me??

In the car, unease in LA.
