Reading week

This week I started my live streams at Midnights.

I’m not gonna lie, it feels weird when you know there’s a camera pointing at you when you’re trying to sleep… Another thing is constantly worrying if I have set it up properly for a privier live stream and it will not show up on main page of Facebook…

So right now lots of anxiety and trying to sleep

Research

Tehching Hsieh is a Taiwanese-American artist known for his series of endurance performance artworks called “One Year Performances.” These performances were created in the late 1970s and early 1980s and involved Hsieh living and working in a confined space for one year at a time, with the goal of exploring the limits of human endurance and the concept of time.

Hsieh’s first One Year Performance was titled “Cage Piece” and took place from September 29th 1978, to September 30th1979. For this piece, Hsieh lived inside a small wire cage in his studio apartment in New York City. He was not allowed to talk, read, write, listen to music, or have any visitors during this time. He ate only food that could be passed through the bars of his cage and slept on a hard bed in the same space.

Hsieh’s subsequent One Year Performances included “Time Clock Piece,” in which he punched a time clock every hour on the hour for a year, and “Outdoor Piece,” in which he lived without shelter in a small outdoor area in New York City for a year.

These performances were not meant to be entertainment or spectacle, but rather serious explorations of endurance and time. Hsieh documented each performance through photographs, video, and written records, which he later exhibited to the public. The documentation became an essential component of the performances, as it allowed viewers to experience the works vicariously and understand the physical and mental challenges that Hsieh faced.

Hsieh’s One Year Performances were ground-breaking in their use of endurance and duration as artistic mediums. They challenged the notion of art as a static object and instead emphasized the importance of process, experience, and time. The performances also raised important questions about the relationship between art and life, and the role of the artist in society.

In conclusion, Tehching Hsieh’s One Year Performances are a significant contribution to the field of performance art. These endurance pieces explored the limits of human endurance and the concept of time, challenging traditional notions of art and emphasizing the importance of process, experience, and documentation. Through these performances, Hsieh created a body of work that continues to inspire and challenge artists today.
