WEEK 4

I’M FREE. FREE TO GO OUT AND WALK AGAIN.

TUTORIAL WITH MIRANDA:

She asked if I could scale it down, have me performing as a monologue. I mean, yeah, deffo have parts where it’s just me, commenting, improv. Deffo need a mic, Forced Entertainment style, integrate some Forced Entertainment.

Researched, found a play called Disco Relax:

Another play I should read, Bouncers by John Godbers

And a film: We Are Your Friends

And a song and music video: DJ by David Bowie

OH WELL – DEPECHE MODE

EVERYTHING COUNTS

Money, moulla, loadsa money, adam curtis style videos.

INSOMNIA

Sleep video by andy warhol

Interview someone about sleep, bloody hell you have to do a film

Have silent imagery, maybe voiceover talking about sleep, then I speak into microphone either the faithless text or my text or a mixture.

The text by Faithless:

[Intro]

And here we are

Half past three in the morning

I can’t get no sleep

Yeah

Yeah

I never sleep

I never sleep

I never sleep

I never sleep

I never sleep

[Verse: Maxi Jazz]

Uh

Yeah, I only smoke weed when I need to

And I need to get some rest

yo, where’s the cess?

I confess, I burned a hole in the mattress

Yes, yes, it was me, I plead guilty

And at the count of three I pull back the duvet

Make my way to the refrigerator

One dry potato inside, no lie, not even bread

Jam

, when the light above my head went bam!

I can’t see, something’s all over me, greasy

Insomnia please release me

 and let me dream

About making mad love on the heath

Tearing off tights with my teeth

But there’s no relief

, I’m wide awake in my kitchen

It’s black and I’m lonely

Oh, if I could only get some sleep

Creeky noises make my skin creep

I need to get some sleep

I can’t get no sleep

A monologue, it’s kinda shit, but I’ll

Here we are again.

Too many thoughts

Too many spirals.

Is there such a thing as voluntary insomnia?

I have so much to do

There’s too much to do

And too much to sleep

Too lazy to eat

Don’t know which path or which form to follow

Don’t know If I’m sleeping as a good person

Don’t know how to reign in order

But it’s not sleep

It’s not sleep

My mind is saying sleep

But I won’t let myself

Won’t let myself sleep

They won’t let me sleep

I won’t sleep

I won’t sleep

There’s gotta to be more

Than sleep

  • Create Reverb and Echo of sleep as overlap to

The IGS music video (permission?)

SIT DOWN, STAND UP.

GOING BACKWARD

COME DOWN BY ANDERSON PAAK

JUST CAUSE IT’S A FUCKING BOP. HAVE SONGS THAT ARE JUST BOPS.

THE TAKEOVER FORMAT:

  • Last Two Shows Were Longer and more Flexible, is the Original Format outdated haha
  • Talked to Tim. We must interrupt.
  • Give people opportunity to speak into mic at live performance , less work than fucking interviewing everyone
  • My idea was a proper show, maybe do performance, club night, what’s best venue? Get security…  school of art until 9pm. What can you do? If Miranda is there? On that Wednesday 20th or Thursday 21st April.
  • I just remembered I used to say to my mum: “I wanna go home”. Even though I was at home in my city/village/house/flat

SMELLS LIKE CLUB SPIRIT:

The text:

Load up on guns, bring your friends

It’s fun to lose and to pretend

She’s over-bored and self-assured

Oh no, I know a dirty word

Hello, hello, hello, how low

Hello, hello, hello, how low

Hello, hello, hello, how low

Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it’s less dangerous

Here we are now, entertain us

I feel stupid and contagious

Here we are now, entertain us

A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido

Yeah, hey

I’m worse at what I do best

And for this gift I feel blessed

Our little group has always been

And always will until the end

Hello, hello, hello, how low

Hello, hello, hello, how low

Hello, hello, hello, how low

Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it’s less dangerous

Here we are now, entertain us

I feel stupid and contagious

Here we are now, entertain us

A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido

Yeah, hey

And I forget just why I taste

Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile

I found it hard, was hard to find

Oh well, whatever, never mind

Hello, hello, hello, how low

Hello, hello, hello, how low

Hello, hello, hello, how low

Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it’s less dangerous

Here we are now, entertain us

I feel stupid and contagious

Here we are now, entertain us

A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido

A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial

A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial

VISUALISATION:

  • Me and other people dancing, close ups, all phased, I might be wrong Video style
  • I originally wanted it to be with Kuba and Vivian, but maybe it could be recordings of them, the recordings could be phased, staring at camera
  • Graphs (maths overlap) of spikes in pier pressure and harleys, and the aerosols coming out from singing at the karaoke
  • My idea of filming people dancing to their favourite music, this could be a compilation, slow-mo, shutter speed is slower

The people dance to write how they’re feeling, and I put it up on the projection.

EASIER THAN LYING

Just wanna do smashing some drums, be a disruptive raver. Maybe i could do that outside. Learn percussion! Or a drummer could come in.

Easier Than Lying opening drums fits well to the beginning steve reich come out.

Wrote this to a friend:

“If I gave you the chance to do a rave in the arts centre would you take it?”

Need a portable speaker, need some beats.

Maybe my high & little l. Do a little dance, a little journey, a spiral throughout the arts centre, everywhere where its allowed.

In the room inbetween: Have someone play the music? Show a film. Or have a different DJ person

There’s the dancing itself. Get more confident.

“So dance dance dance like it’s the last last night of your life”

“hell yeah. Drink it up, drink drink it up”

“So I say thank you for the music. For giving it to me”

“They’ll try to push drugs that keep us all dumb d

“They will not force us. They will stop degrading us. They will not control us. We will be victorious” ..I WILL BE VICTORIOUS!!! (maybe don’t even need song, just text)

  • Take the text of mainstream club songs and put them on screen, Mags planted the concept of putting text on screen for more effect, I’m very much stripping it bare. And have it be interludes of silence where it’s just text
  • Do that with other songs and see what it does
  • Can deffo do, less mainstream: “Please could you stop the noise, I’m trying to get some rest”

Fucking sick of worrying about my coat

Feeling grief in the club with all these people:

“Oh isn’t that lovely. You have experiencs in grief, the plural. You can develop a quicker more mature and healthy way of dealing of it, unlike going out and just carrying on as normal, at least the way they are performing in ur narrow view of their worlds”

ALLE JAHRE WIEDER:

Ask people what they don’t like about what some people have said, old cliched sayings that are toxic and repressive. Can be triggering, nothing xenophobic.

Have all the demonisation of young people, from moral panics to 60s headlines to daily mail to sayings to superspreaders headlines (sued for defamation, but it’s their words)

There’s something called Multimedia Music Expression.

…I’m forgetting THE DOCUMENTARY, THE FILM, THE VOICES. PLAY THEM THROUGHOUT.

When you’re outside, after the club

BELA LUGOSI’S DEAD:

Have a livestream camera on me, capturing my performance of turning into a vampire, all through facial expression, Bowie as Elephant Man style. Crouching down, becoming a creature of the night, very slow and subtle, no sound.

FORCED ENTERTAINMENT

Can’t find much on Disco Relax, so looked at Forced Entertainment & nightclubs, foun the piece First Night:

“We make work that refuses to be simply an entertainment taking place at a distance, down the other end of the telescope, down there on the stage. Instead we try to find ways to triangulate the work directly to the auditorium. As if to ask the audience who they are and who is sitting with them, to wonder not about the narrative of a drama but about the truly present situation and dynamic of the theatre. So many of our shows ask that question in different ways. Often we have worked by creating a kind of dramaturgical tension in the auditorium or between the stage and the auditorium. For example, in First Night the performers appear as rather failing vaudevillians or nightclub entertainers who effectively turn on the audience in different ways – vague insinuations and then direct attacks, the surface of the entertainment crumbling. “It’s all good people here; there’s no racists here; there’s no homophobes here; there’s no wife beaters here.” Taken together it creates a kind of probing of the audience, forcing them to take a position, to think about who they are and who the strangers in the seats nearby might be. Theatre perhaps sees itself for the most part as a gathering of the good, honest and true to watch something that will enlighten them. A benign, convivial space. I think, a lot of the time, our work wants to niggle at that, transforming it into this unfolding set of ethical and political negotiations with the audience which connects to this idea of witnessing. Something is at stake.”

OTHER OPTION:

CRESCENDOLLS

OBSERVATIONS IN HARLEYS & PIER

QUESTIONS AT THE DOOR

  1. Are you gonna dance in there like a slave to capitalist hegemony or are you gonna be a real individualist piece of art in your performance? Just asking
  2. Consent is key. People smiling at you does not mean they wanna get intimate in anyway. And an intimate dance does not suggest anything else, communication and respect is key
  3. Have a good time

images of my performance on friday 25th:

also met up with izzy to talk about lights. I bought a whole lot of gels, but they feel kind of useless.

going to pier for research:

ZEE’S OBSERVANCE OF CROWDS

The Centre Rule:

Centre are the new ones, especially those who didn’t go out for 18th

Outskirts are the experts, they’re not putting their hands up

A very simple choreography, that Binary of sheep-like (another animal derogatory term) dancers and sophisticated experience pros..

A choreography

People singing/shouting tracks acapella without music tracks, encourage audience to sing like a band would the audience when introducing new song like Bastille did

Play with the fact people are not allowed to drink alcohol, I will not encourage people to drink or take drugs

(But given the nature I can’t tell

You know that moment when wind comes into Pier after a more stuffy dance floor?

Could be selfish but also considerate of wider event, invite a core audience, my friends for an hour of the three hours hours they’ll be there, or half an hour, and during that time is the 15 mins Miranda advertises. But everyone’s got different schedules. 12-1 is obvious, but we’ll see. Given people’s schedules they might not have time to check other peoples work.

Grief, thinking about my dad and something else sad and philosophical, when my dad did the dance moves on that event in France when we toured going through hotels

It’s something nasty and forceful and trying to be a bigger and better but a gloatijt/gloatinf/global version of itself. This club culture is toxic in the end and will kill us all. Or maybe its just my anxiety saying that, maybe some of you not feeling quite part of it at 2.39am on the dancefloor can relate. When people suddenly move elsewhere, when you relied on all their presence, validation and attention.  And you feel like they all hate you like you thought in real life. At least that’s the strong feeling.

  • But maybe I’m not the big outcast I claim myself to be.
  • Must do the shower

What happens if you lose that coat.

What is the meaning of it all????

What is the point of Ensemble.

When you stand up and the drink hits. You’ve been writing all your meaning in that sofa, then you stand up and get cancelled by security yours truly.

How many people can you dance with and move from to increase but destroy you’re feeling of validation

If artists can get naked so easily including student artists, why can’t they get drunk?

That Pier worker who slammed down my glass at bar, dark hair, I dig her style. So confident.
